According to Dr Sharib:
"Al-Barr is the One Who is the fountain of all good and beautiful things,
beneficence and benevolent actions."
To emulate this name we are advised to do good to others to the best of our
ability and to the utmost of our capacities. To show respect and to be loving
and kind to all.
Appropriate recitation can remove one from the labyrinth of the love of the
world, relieve one from undesirable pursuits, and lead to a better life and
higher ideals. It can also ensure safety for a child until the age of majority.

Al-Ghazali refers to a story of Moses in connection with with man's part in this
name. It seems that Moses saw a man standing by the leg of the Throne of
God. He asked his Lord how the man had come to such a high position. The
Lord replied "He was not envious of any of my servants for what I gave to them,
and he was good to his parents." This, Al-Ghazali says, is what it means to be
a doer of good among men.

The verse from the holy Qur'an is the speech of the people ' who believe and
whose deeds follow them in Faith'. They are the recipient of many blessings -
weare told that they shall be joined with their family, will have the fruit of their
works, will eat fruit and meat and anything they may desire, share a cup free of
frivolity and sin, and be served by handsome youths. They will discuss with one
another and say that they have been saved from the chastisement of a
scorching wind by the merciful goodness of God.
The importance of good deeds in this life thus cannot be over emphasised -
though we have been told it a thousand times - let us hope and pray that Allah
Al-Barr opens up to us the way to realise the significance of this whilst we have
time and opportunity.
The 'deeds that we do' may also refer to completing our daily duties whilst
never forgetting Allah in our heart.
