It is He Who creates
From the very beginning
And He can restore (life).

Al-Ghazali refers to Al-Mubdi' together with Al-Mu'id (The Restorer).

"It means the one who bestows existence [mujid], but when this
origination is not preceded by something like it, it is called a beginning;
and when it is preceded by something like it, it is called a restoration."

According to Sheikh Muzafferuddin and Shems Friedlander this name
refers to:

"He who has created for the first time all beings from nothing and without
any model."

(Ninety-Nine Names of Allah: Shems Friedlander with Sheikh Muzaffereddin. Harper & Row 1978)

"Every effect is originated as its cause precedes it. Every originated
(effect) is transformable because it is preceded by its originator, its
transformer."

Sufism and the Islamic Tradition: Trans. by Jalbani. Octagon Press. 1980.

In an instant God produces in the unseen world that which transforms the
visible universe in manifold ways, without that which has been
transformed being aware of the true cause or nature of the
transformation. That which is evident in the transformation is attributed to
secondary causes that in truth have no significance in the transformation
- unless it be to veil the true Cause.
