According to Dr Sharib:
"Ash-Shahid is the One Who is everywhere and is at every time and at all times
with creation."
To emulate the name we are told to believe that Allah is with us everywhere
and sees everything. We are advised to abstain from committing sins and to
adopt better manners.
Appropriate recitation inclines us towards the truth and makes us hate
falsehood. Dr Sharib specifies the way that the name can cause our partner or
child to become obedient.

Some other references:
Say: "O ye people of the Book!
Why reject ye the Signs
Of Allah, when Allah
Is Himself witness
To all ye do?"
Soon will We show them
Our Signs in the (furthest)
Regions (of the earth), and
In their own souls, until
It becomes manifest to them
That this is the Truth.
Is it not enough that
Thy Lord doth witness
All things?
Al-Ghazali tells us that God is the knower of things visible and the One aware
of things invisible.
(Al-Ghazali - The Ninety-nine Beautiful Names of God. Trans. Burrel/Daher: ITS: 1992.)
Amongst the Sufis the following story is told. A rich man and powerful man once
became attracted to a beautiful and virtuous young woman. He arranged
affairs so that they were left alone. He commanded her to close all the doors in
the house so that he could have his way with her . She was powerless to do
anything else and obeyed. When she returned he asked her if she had closed
all the doors. She said she had closed all the doors except one. "Why did you
not close that one" he demanded. "That door is the door to God and that one
cannot be closed as He is witness to everything" she replied. Overcome with
shame he repented his intentions and left that woman alone. The implication of
this story should be deeply considered.
