According to Dr Sharib:
"Ash-Shakur is the One Who ever, even on a minor and insignificant action,
gives too much and Who on ordinary worship praises very highly."
To emulate the name we are advised by Dr Sharib to be pleased always with the
benevolence and blessings of God - to be ever offering praise and gratitude to
The Donor. This may be verbal, by saying 'Praise be to Allah' or by spending
money in the cause of God and helping people, or it may be through engaging
in physical acts of worship and service, and thus making the bodily members
obedient to the commands of God. It may also be by purging the heart of
enmity, jealousy, rancor, animosity, pride and vanity.
Appropriate recitation leads to a change of circumstances for the better, and to
cast away gloom and grief.

Al-Ghazali tells us that the holy Prophet Muhammed said:-
"Whoever does not thank men does not thank God."

"And the best form of gratitude for the blessings of God - great and glorious - is
to put them to use, not in disobeying, but in obeying Him."

Hazrat Ibn 'Abbad of Ronda has this to say:
"But a still more direct path to Him is accessible to you. Remain in the station of
gratitude by acknowledging all that is due to Him, and ask for more. In that way
you can carry in your hearts the grandeur and sublimity of your Lord and His
qualities of perfection and transcendence. At the same time you will be aware of
the extent of your own baseness, shame and insignificance, and of your lower
self's true lowliness and inadequacy. Look then at the graces God has
bestowed upon you in whatever form they may take. Once you have scrutinised
them carefully you will have begun to recognise His bounty to you and you will
begin to give thanks for it. Your intimate knowledge of the scope of His grace is
itself gratitude and the key to every good thing, and the source of
superabundance in every kind of good fortune and uprightness. Our Lord may
He be exalted has said, "If you give thanks, I will indeed give you more!" (Qur'an
14:7) "And again be mindful of the bounties of God and perhaps you will be
successful" (Qur'an 7:69)."

At first one may be grateful to God for the material gifts of this world - then one
may be grateful for the spiritual and intangible gifts - then one may wish to go
further and seek to be grateful to Him, for Himself, not seeking His gifts. The one
whose sincere gratitude reaches so far may become the one empowered by Him
to grant His gifts. Upon His friends, the holy saints, God has bestowed this gift of
gifts, since they sought Him for Himself. The sincere sufi disciples seek to learn
this through their relationship with their guide.
The great gift of forgiveness at the end of our physical life in this world is the gift
of God alone and is beyond estimation or deserving.
