This book presents in artistic photographic form some of the great shrines to be found in Shiraz. There are few cities in the world that can lay claim to such a magnificent history of spirituality as the capital of Fars – Shiraz. A true jewel in the crown of ancient Persia and a treasure of modern Iran.<\/p>\n

Hafiz Shirazi is of course inextricably woven into the history and the living spirituality of Shiraz. He is universally admired and extolled for his great poetry and can be classified as one of the great poets of the world. Admired and even envied by writers like Goethe and Emerson his place in the galaxy of mystic poets is assured but it is not always understood how deeply spiritual his works are and how inspired by his mystic experiences. He is used today by many for his unique ability to throw light upon modern events across the centuries. People in Iran often consult his writings to gain insight into their own predicaments. Beyond this his writings convey a depth of knowledge of spirituality that is truly inspired.<\/p>\n

The spiritual greatness of Shiraz would indeed be secured by this great poet alone but in fact as this book shows, there have been many great mystics of Shiraz, over the ages, that have contributed to its renown. The tombs of many have been obscured but some remain and have been wonderfully revealed by excellent photographs in this volume. They are the work of a young photographer Nur Jamil Zahuri, who has a genuine interest in the subject. The texts in English and Farsi are taken in part from the writings of Maryam Teimoori Moghaddam who has written a recent book on the subject to be published shortly in England.
