During his final and fatal illness Dr
Zahurul Hassan Sharib requested
those of his disciples and family caring
for him to sing repeatedly to him the
verses that we present here. They were
composed by his spiritual guide. If we
tired a little and stopped, he would
come round from what appeared to be
a state of semi-consciousness, and
insist we continue. I generally managed
only to join in the refrains but they
stayed with me, however imperfectly
and still spring , unbidden but very
welcome, into my mind from time to
time.
Thanks to an Urdu version published by
Hazrat Inaam Hasan, my wife Farhana
has been able and kind enough to
provide me with an explanation of the
Urdu text, which I have done my best to
transcribe faithfully in English. May the
all-Mighty pardon my errors.

Before everything, say 'in the name of Allah'. There
is no deity, only Allah.
Allah is One, Allah is One,
None is worthy of worship but the Lord.
The Creator He is, The Master He is,
Like unto the Lord there is none.
There is no other deity, only Allah! Only Allah! Only
Allah!
Our Lord is High above all,
He it is who created the world,
None can be compared to Him,
We are His servants, He is our Master.
Allah, Allah! Only Allah! Only Allah! Only Allah!
The remembrance of God lights up the heart.
There is no work better than that,
Just recite the name of God.
There is no name better than that.
Allah, Allah! Only Allah! Only Allah! Only Allah!
When Muhammed came into this world,
Good things, very good things he told us,
He recited, recited God's Qur'an,
The straight, straight way he showed us.
The light of Muhammed, peace be upon him, peace
be upon him, peace be upon him.
Muhammed came into this world,
To recite the words of the Lord,
He destroyed what was evil,
He always spoke only the truth.
The light of Muhammed, peace be upon him, peace
be upon him, peace be upon him.
It is peace of the heart, the religion of the prophet,
It gives shelter, the religion of the prophet,
It is a candle for the world, the religion of the prophet,
It is the sign of truth, the religion of the prophet.
The light of Muhammed, peace be upon him, peace
be upon him, peace be upon him.
There is no deity but Allah, Muhammed is the
prophet of Allah.

'Before Everything' by Khadim Nawob Gudri Shah Baba

The holy Prophet Muhammed
The souls of saints with one clear voice recite,
The praise of a moon that illuminates the night,
To show the true and holy light he was directed,
To shine and in the water of existence be reflected.
Who or whatever you think Allah to be,
It is the truth simple and clear to me,
To advise all men the Prophets were directed,
To seal that deal holy Muhammed selected.
His generosity, to that I can bear real and ready witness,
Of his beauty I stand in awe, for who can be so fearless,
As to compose a verse on that one, so completely peerless,
The shadow of his personality alone makes one speechless.

Hazrat Ali
In the smile of great Hazrat Ali,
Sweet peace and beatitude see,
In the light of his Mustafa eyes,
Regard the way of the pure and wise:
In his breath feel a sweet scented breeze.
O Gateway of Knowledge, help us please.
Ya Ali al-Murtaza
Ya Ali al-Murtaza, the eyes of holy Mustafa must have seen it,
The courage and stature of a lion that he has, everyone knows it.
Ya Ali al-Murtaza, the eyes of holy Mustafa must have seen it,
The gate of knowledge he is and each and every Arif knows it.
Ya Ali al-Murtaza, the eyes of holy Mustafa must have seen it,
Married to blessed Fatima adored daughter of the holy prophet.
Ya Ali al-Murtaza, the eyes of holy Mustafa must have seen it,
Father of Hasan and Hussain , asked for their life, they gave it.
Ya Ali al-Murtaza, the eyes of holy Mustafa must have seen it,
A robe to cover every fault of us poor sinners, he received it.
Ya Ali al-Murtaza, the eyes of holy Mustafa must have seen it,
The Divine secrets he got and only to a well he spoke of it.
Ya Ali al-Murtaza, the eyes of holy Mustafa must have seen it,
Supreme master of the Sufi sheykhs, and all now well know it,
Ya Ali al-Murtaza, the eyes of holy Mustafa must have seen it,
Loosener of knots for those whose despair knew no limit.
Ya Ali al-Murtaza, the eyes of holy Mustafa must have seen it,
The light of love for Allah on his brow, and shining from it.

Grace Divine
His grace divine is love bestowing,
A river of light into us flowing.
In the holy Prophet’s shade we sit,
On green grass - and delighting in it.
Endless peace we are daily knowing,
O Grace divine, His love bestowing.

Hazrat Ali
The essence of bravery, where else can it be -
But in the pure heart of the holy Hazrat Ali!
If it is a real lion that would you wish to see,
See it in the personality of Hazrat Ali.
If a problem you have and no solution see,
Find the answer in the bounty of Hazrat Ali.
Branches surely arise from the trunk of a tree,
The lineage of saints comes from Hazrat Ali.
If you seek inner and outer stability,
You will find it in the strength of Hazrat Ali
If the smile of the holy Prophet you want to see,
Find it reflected in the face of Hazrat Ali.

Allah
At the start of everything Bismillah we must say,
It is the right thing to do, it is how we are taught to pray.
Allah, no one nor any thing can be likened to Him,
Our lives and words are hollow unless filled by Him.
In its entirety and in every part the universe is His,
Every particle, person, and thing His worshipper really is.
Allah, Allah, if I could find words good enough to praise,
To the blue vault of heaven those words I would raise.
But His Mercy is such, that to His Mercy these poem’s look,
In the fervent prayer that their flaws He will overlook.
To anything that is wrongly said may He close all ears,
And open hearts to anything good that in them appears.
