Yaaa-'ayyu-hallaziina 'aamanuu kutiba 'alay-kumus-Siyaamu kamaa kutiba 'alal-laziina min-qablikum la-'allakum tatta-quun,-
O, believers! Fasting is prescribed for you, even as it was a precept for those before you, that you may be God fearing.

Commentary
The principle of fasting existed even before the advent of Islam. Fasting is enjoined during the month of Ramadan. This fasting is rigid. It differs from other fasts. Fasting is an exercise in self-denial. the object of fasting is self-purification, self-control and discipline.
